Dengue cure: how many days does recovery take?

Short answer
Dengue symptoms often improve within several days, although full recovery and energy may take longer.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Recovery
- Fever may settle before energy and appetite return.
- Fluids
- Take frequent small drinks and monitor urination.
- Medicines
- Avoid aspirin or ibuprofen unless advised.
What the recovery period means
Dengue is a viral illness with a feverish phase that may include headache, muscle aches, joint pain, chills, nausea or a rash. Feeling better when the fever drops does not always mean the illness has completely passed; some people become more unwell around the time the fever settles. Weakness and reduced appetite may linger while the body recovers.
There is no specific home medicine that removes dengue immediately. A clinician may assess symptoms, hydration and blood results, especially if the illness is changing. Avoid aspirin and ibuprofen unless a clinician specifically advises them, because dengue can be associated with bleeding.
How to support recovery
Rest, take frequent small drinks and choose light food as tolerated. Keep a record of temperature, fluids, urination, vomiting and any bleeding so changes are easier to describe. Use paracetamol only as directed by a healthcare professional or the product instructions, and check before giving it to a child. Reduce mosquito exposure while unwell so mosquitoes are less likely to carry the virus to others.
Arrange a GP Consultation if fever continues, symptoms are worsening, you cannot drink normally, or you are unsure whether testing or follow-up is needed.
When to seek urgent care
Seek urgent medical help for severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, bleeding from the nose or gums, blood in vomit or stool, unusual bruising, extreme sleepiness, confusion, breathing difficulty, cold or clammy skin, or very little urine. These warning signs can appear as the fever improves and need prompt assessment.
Questions to ask a clinician
Ask which symptoms should trigger reassessment, how much fluid is suitable for you, whether blood testing needs repeating, which pain relievers are appropriate, and when you can safely return to work, school or exercise.

Questions people ask
Can dengue improve and then worsen?
Yes. A change around the time fever settles can be significant, so monitor closely and seek help for warning signs.
How do I know I am recovering?
Improving alertness, drinking, urination, appetite and symptoms are reassuring, but persistent or new concerns still need clinical advice.
