Can dengue spread from person to person?

When a mosquito feeds on a person with dengue virus in their blood, it can later transmit the virus through another bite. Sharing a home, hugging, coughing, or sharing utensils does not normally transmit dengue. Rare non-mosquito routes can occur in specific circumstances, so a clinician should assess unusual exposures such as blood contact or pregnancy-related concerns.

The infected person may experience fever, headache, chills, muscle aches, joint pain, rash, or easy bruising, although symptoms vary. A symptom alone does not establish dengue.

Anyone with possible dengue should avoid mosquito bites by using repellent, wearing clothing that covers skin, and staying behind screens where possible. Remove standing water near the home because it can support mosquito breeding. Household members should use the same precautions, especially during daylight hours.

Arrange a GP Consultation for a concerning illness or possible exposure. Tell the clinician about the timing of symptoms, mosquito bites, travel, and any direct blood exposure.

Seek emergency care for bleeding, severe abdominal pain, ongoing vomiting, breathing difficulty, fainting, confusion, or profound weakness. Prompt medical advice is also appropriate when fluids cannot be kept down or when a pregnant person or someone with major medical conditions may be affected.

Ask whether the exposure needs testing, how to reduce mosquito contact at home, which pain relief is safe, and what changes should prompt immediate review. Explain whether anyone else has symptoms and whether you share sleeping or living spaces.
