What should you know about delayed sunburn?

How the structures involved in Sunburn differ from normal

Short answer

A delayed sunburn can become red, tender, or swollen after exposure ends because inflammation develops over time in ultraviolet-damaged skin.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why symptoms appear later

Skin may feel normal immediately after being outdoors, then become warm, red, tight, or painful as the inflammatory response builds. The affected area can later peel, and more severe burns may form blisters. Cloud, shade, water, and glass do not reliably prevent all ultraviolet exposure.

The redness is a sign of skin injury rather than a safe level of tanning. Repeated exposure contributes to sun-damaged skin over time. The amount of discomfort and the area involved help determine whether home care is reasonable.

Comfort and protection

Move out of direct sun, cool the skin with a damp cloth or cool shower, drink fluids, and wear loose clothing. Apply a bland moisturiser or an emollient when the skin is intact; avoid products that sting and do not break blisters or pull off peeling skin.

Use shade, clothing, and broad-spectrum sunscreen on healed or unbroken exposed skin. Avoid further sun until the area has recovered. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether a medicine for pain or itch is appropriate for you.

When to seek medical care

Arrange medical advice for extensive blistering, severe pain, marked swelling, dehydration, fever, vomiting, dizziness, confusion, or a burn involving the eyes, face, hands, or genitals. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty or a rapidly worsening reaction.

Useful questions

Ask whether the severity and location need examination, how to dress or moisturise blisters, whether another medicine is suitable for your health history, and when it is safe to resume normal outdoor activity.

Questions people ask

Why did my sunburn appear after I came indoors?

Inflammation from ultraviolet injury can take time to develop, so warmth, redness, and tenderness may become noticeable later.

Should I peel or pop sunburn blisters?

No. Leave blisters and peeling skin intact, keep the area clean, and seek advice if the burn is extensive or worsening.
