Short answer

Delayed post-natal depression can develop weeks or months after birth and may affect mood, sleep, energy, thinking, and confidence as a parent.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How it may present

Post-natal depression is a treatable health condition, not a sign that you are a bad parent or that you do not love your baby. A parent may feel persistently low, empty, anxious, guilty, irritable, detached, or unable to enjoy things. Fatigue, difficulty sleeping even when the baby sleeps, poor concentration, and feeling overwhelmed can also occur. Symptoms may build gradually, so family members sometimes notice a change before the parent names it. Baby blues are usually shorter-lived; ongoing or worsening symptoms deserve assessment.

What to do next

Tell a GP, midwife, obstetric clinician, or trusted support person what has been happening, including thoughts you find frightening or difficult to say aloud. Accept practical help with meals, rest, childcare, and appointments. Treatment may include talking therapy, social support, medication, or a combination; a clinician can consider breastfeeding, physical health, and your preferences. Keep regular food, fluids, and rest where possible, but do not wait for self-care alone to resolve severe symptoms.

When to seek urgent help

Seek emergency help now if you may harm yourself or the baby, feel unable to stay safe, hear or see things others do not, feel extremely confused, or have unusual beliefs with little need for sleep. Ask someone trusted to stay with you and help care for the baby while support is arranged. Urgent assessment is also appropriate when depression is rapidly worsening, you cannot eat or drink, or you are unable to manage basic care.

Questions for your doctor

Ask: Could this be post-natal depression or another condition? What treatments fit my symptoms and feeding plans? How quickly can support begin? What warning signs should my family watch for? Who should we contact outside appointment hours?
