Deep Fissures on Feet: What to Know

Short answer
Deep fissures on the feet are splits in thickened, dry, or inflamed skin that can hurt and allow infection, so persistent or worsening cracks need assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Typical contributors
- Dryness, pressure, friction, dermatitis, or psoriasis
- Protect the area
- Moisturise surrounding skin, cover the split, and reduce friction
What may be behind the splits
Fissures often form where dry, thick skin is stretched by walking or pressure, especially around the heels and other weight-bearing areas. Atopic Dermatitis can make skin dry, itchy, and fragile. Psoriasis may create sharply defined, thick, scaly areas that split. Repeated washing, harsh products, friction, and poorly fitting shoes can add to the problem. The pattern, itch, scale, and other affected areas help a clinician identify the cause.
Protective foot care
Clean gently, dry carefully, and apply a thick emollient to intact surrounding skin after washing. Emollient Therapy may reduce stiffness and help the surface stay flexible. Cover an open split with a clean dressing, choose cushioned closed footwear, and avoid barefoot walking on rough surfaces. Do not cut deeply into callus or apply irritants to broken skin. If cracks keep returning, treatment should address the skin condition as well as the fissure.
When to get help
Seek prompt care for spreading redness, warmth, swelling, pus, increasing pain, fever, or difficulty walking. Have any foot wound assessed early if you have diabetes, reduced sensation, poor circulation, or immune suppression. A fissure that remains open, bleeds repeatedly, or returns despite protection also deserves a clinical review.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the appearance fits dermatitis, psoriasis, infection, or pressure-related dryness; which moisturiser and dressing to use; and how to manage thick skin safely. Tell the clinician about itch, bleeding, footwear, and any medical conditions affecting your feet.

Questions people ask
Can I walk normally with a deep fissure?
Painful or open fissures may worsen with pressure; use protective footwear and seek advice if walking is difficult.
Why do foot fissures keep coming back?
Recurrence can reflect ongoing dryness, pressure, or an untreated condition such as dermatitis or psoriasis.
