What should you know about deep cellulite?

Cellulite is a surface appearance shaped by structures beneath the skin, rather than simply a measure of body weight. Fibrous bands can tether the skin downward while fat compartments push upward, producing dimples or an orange-peel texture. It may be visible when standing, sitting, or gently pinching the skin, and its appearance can vary with posture, muscle tone, skin laxity, and tissue distribution. It is not the same as sudden painful swelling, warmth, or redness.

A consultation should identify whether dimpling, laxity, or volume is the main concern. Subcision releases selected fibrous attachments beneath a dimple. Radiofrequency skin tightening uses controlled heat to target laxity, while RF microneedling combines needling with radiofrequency energy for selected texture concerns. Carboxytherapy is another treatment option discussed in some practices. Each approach has different recovery, risks, candidacy, and expected course, so a clinician should examine the area rather than promise a uniform result.

Cellulite itself is usually a cosmetic concern, but sudden one-sided swelling, pain, redness, warmth, skin tenderness, or a new firm mass is not typical cellulite and should be medically assessed. Seek urgent help if swelling comes with breathlessness, chest pain, faintness, or severe illness. After a procedure, increasing pain, spreading redness, fever, or drainage also warrants prompt contact with the treating team.

Ask which tissue layer is driving the dimpling, whether the pattern is suitable for subcision or energy treatment, how many areas can be treated at once, what recovery restrictions apply, and how changes will be assessed.
