Deep breathing for panic attacks

How the structures involved in Panic Disorder differ from normal

Short answer

Deep breathing for panic attacks can slow over-breathing, reduce physical alarm symptoms, and help you regain control while the episode passes.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Gentle exhalation rather than very large breaths

Sit safely and let each breath stay comfortable

How breathing affects panic

Panic can make breathing rapid and shallow. That pattern may intensify light-headedness, tingling, chest tightness, a racing heartbeat, and the feeling that something is seriously wrong. A gentle, unforced breath with a slightly longer exhale can interrupt that cycle. Breathing is a coping tool, not proof that every chest or heart symptom is caused by panic. Panic Disorder can bring repeated unexpected attacks, worry about another attack, or changes in daily behaviour.

A calmer breathing practice

Sit with your feet supported and loosen tight clothing. Breathe in quietly through your nose for a comfortable count, then breathe out slowly without pushing the air. Let the next breath arrive naturally and repeat for several cycles. Keep the breaths small and easy; taking very large breaths or breathing into a paper bag can make symptoms worse. Focus on the movement of your abdomen, name five things you can see, and remain somewhere safe until the wave settles. Practise when calm so the method feels familiar during panic.

When symptoms need medical attention

Call emergency services for severe or new chest pain, marked difficulty breathing, fainting, blue or grey lips, confusion, or symptoms after a possible severe allergic reaction. Seek prompt medical advice when attacks are new, keep returning, or lead you to avoid normal activities. Chest tightness, palpitations, numbness and tingling, or feeling anxious can have causes besides panic and deserve assessment when persistent or unusual.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether your symptoms fit panic, whether a physical check is needed, and which breathing method is suitable for you. You can also ask about a GP Consultation, Mental Health Assessment, and treatments that reduce repeat attacks.

Questions people ask

Can deep breathing stop a panic attack immediately?

It may reduce the body’s alarm response, but symptoms can take time to settle and breathing is not a guaranteed instant stop.

Should I breathe into a paper bag?

No. Rebreathing air can be unsafe, especially if the symptoms have another cause.
