What Should You Know About a Decibel Hearing Test?

The result is usually shown on an audiogram. The decibel level indicates how loud a sound needs to be before you hear it; a higher level can indicate reduced hearing sensitivity. Testing may assess each ear separately and may include tones, speech, or both.

Decibels describe sound level, while pitch describes whether a sound is low or high. A hearing test checks several pitches because hearing can be affected more at some pitches than others. The clinician records the softest tone detected at each pitch and compares the pattern between ears.

A result may suggest a problem in the outer or middle ear, such as a blockage, or in the inner ear or hearing nerve. The number alone does not identify the cause. Ear examination, speech testing, and the pattern across pitches help the clinician decide what should happen next.

Tell the clinic about recent loud-noise exposure, ear pain, discharge, ringing, dizziness, or an ear infection. Mention medicines and any difference you notice between your ears. Avoid unusually loud sound before the appointment if possible, so temporary changes do not complicate the assessment.

During the test, sit quietly and respond whenever you hear a tone, even if it is faint. Ask the clinician to explain the audiogram and whether the pattern points to a blocked ear, an inner-ear problem, or the need for another test. Follow-up may involve treating a cause such as earwax buildup, monitoring hearing, or discussing hearing support.

Arrange medical assessment for hearing loss that persists, worsens, affects one ear, or makes conversation difficult. Seek prompt care for sudden hearing loss, especially in one ear, or hearing change accompanied by severe dizziness, facial weakness, severe headache, or neurological symptoms.

Ear pain, fluid or blood from the ear, or a new severe ringing sound also warrants timely evaluation. Do not insert cotton buds or other objects into the ear while waiting, because this can push material deeper or injure the ear canal.

Useful questions include: Which pitches are affected? Is the change the same in both ears? Could earwax, infection, noise exposure, or a medicine be contributing? Do I need a repeat hearing test, an ear examination, or referral to an ear specialist? What can I do to protect the hearing I have?
