What should you know about dating scan images?

A scan may include different views because the uterus, pregnancy position and movement affect the image. Labels, lines and measurements help the clinician record findings; they are not a diagnosis by themselves. The visible shape can look unfamiliar, and a still image may not show everything assessed during the live examination. The report and clinician’s explanation carry more meaning than comparing your picture with an online image.

Keep the images with the written report and ask the sonographer or maternity clinician to explain the views and measurements. Ask which findings are confirmed and which need follow-up. Do not use an image to estimate sex, diagnose a problem, or decide whether treatment is needed. If you are offered screening later in the first trimester, ask how it differs from dating.

Seek urgent medical advice for heavy bleeding, severe or one-sided pain, fainting, shoulder-tip pain, fever, or marked weakness. These symptoms should be assessed on their own merits, even if an image seemed reassuring. Contact your care team if the report asks for follow-up and you have not received an appointment.

Ask: What does each label mean? What was measured? Was the pregnancy location and development assessed? Is repeat imaging recommended?
