Dark yellow urine and UTI: what to know

When you drink less, sweat heavily, or lose fluid through vomiting or diarrhoea, the kidneys conserve water and urine can look darker and smell stronger. A UTI more often presents with burning when passing urine, an urgent or frequent need to go, lower abdominal discomfort, or cloudy urine. A UTI can occur at the same time as dehydration, but colour by itself cannot distinguish them.

Brown or tea-coloured urine, yellowing of the eyes or skin, or pale stools can point to a liver or bile problem rather than a bladder infection. Supplements and some medicines can also alter urine colour.

Sip water regularly if you can drink normally, and notice whether the colour becomes lighter as hydration improves. Do not use leftover antibiotics or someone else’s prescription. If burning, urgency, pelvic pain, or a strong persistent odour continues, arrange a clinical assessment; a urine test may help identify infection and guide treatment. Keep track of fever, back pain, vomiting, and any visible blood.

Seek prompt medical care for fever or chills, pain in the side or back, vomiting, marked weakness, confusion, or visible blood in urine. These symptoms can signal a more serious infection or another problem needing assessment. Get urgent help if you cannot keep fluids down, are faint, or have severe pain.

Ask whether your symptoms fit a bladder infection, whether a urine test is appropriate, and which pain-relief options are suitable for you. Mention pregnancy, kidney problems, allergies, recent antibiotics, and any new medicines or supplements.
