Dark yellow smelly urine: what to know

A strong odor often becomes more noticeable when urine is concentrated, such as after sweating or drinking less. Coffee, some foods, vitamins, and medicines may alter smell without causing illness. Smell becomes more concerning when paired with burning, urgency, frequent urination, cloudy urine, lower abdominal pain, fever, or chills. Dark urine with yellow skin or eyes, pale stools, or nausea can indicate a problem outside the bladder and should be reviewed. Vaginal discharge or bleeding can also change what you notice in the toilet. Odor alone cannot establish the cause.

If you are otherwise well and have no fluid restriction, drink water regularly and see whether the smell and shade settle. Avoid douching or fragranced products, and do not take antibiotics without a prescription. Write down when the change began, recent foods and medicines, and any pain or fever. Make an appointment if the odor persists, keeps returning, or is accompanied by urinary symptoms; testing can guide treatment.

Get prompt medical care for fever or chills with urinary symptoms, pain in the side or back, vomiting, visible blood, pregnancy, or very little urine. Urgent help is needed for confusion, collapse, severe weakness, or inability to drink. Yellow eyes or skin should be assessed promptly. Heat, heavy sweating, headache, and dizziness can fit Heat Exhaustion and deserve timely attention.

Tell your doctor whether the odor is new, whether it changes after drinking water, and whether you have burning, urgency, discharge, fever, or pain. Ask if a urine test is appropriate and whether a medicine or supplement may explain the change.
