Dark urine and a yeast infection: what to know

Thrush commonly affects the vulva and vagina, causing itching, irritation, soreness during sex, or thick discharge. Dark yellow urine may simply be concentrated from low fluid intake. Brown, red, or tea-coloured urine can reflect blood, medicines, food pigments, or a urinary condition. Burning when passing urine can occur when irritated skin is exposed to urine, but it can also indicate a urinary infection. A clinician may need to examine the area and test urine rather than treating every symptom as thrush.

Drink fluids if you have no medical restriction, and observe whether urine becomes lighter. Avoid scented washes and douching, which can worsen irritation. If this is your first suspected yeast infection, symptoms are unusual, or treatment has not helped, arrange an assessment. Use an antifungal only as advised by a pharmacist or clinician, especially during pregnancy or if symptoms keep returning.

Get prompt medical help for red or brown urine, fever, chills, pain in the side or back, vomiting, severe vulval swelling, inability to pass urine, or feeling very unwell. These features are not explained reliably by uncomplicated thrush and may need urine testing or urgent treatment.

Ask whether your symptoms fit thrush, whether urine testing is needed, and which treatment is suitable with your medicines, pregnancy status, or health conditions. Describe the urine colour and any discharge, itching, pain, or fever.
