Dark urine and itchy skin: possible causes and next steps

Dark urine after heat, exercise, vomiting, or poor fluid intake may be concentrated urine; dry skin can itch for unrelated reasons. Itching together with tea-coloured urine can also occur when bile pigments enter urine because bile flow or liver processing is disturbed. Watch for yellowing of the eyes or skin, pale stools, nausea, tiredness, reduced appetite, or discomfort under the ribs. A rash, new soap, or new medicine may point towards a skin or medication cause instead. The symptom pair does not identify a single condition by itself.

Write down when both symptoms started and whether the urine changed before the itching. Check for new medicines, herbal products, foods, travel, heat exposure, and contact with anyone unwell. Drink fluids normally unless a clinician has restricted them. Avoid scratching with hot water; use a gentle, fragrance-free moisturiser while arranging advice. A clinician may examine the skin and request urine and blood tests, including tests of liver function and bile-related changes.

Contact a clinician promptly when dark urine and itching occur together without a clear short-lived explanation, especially if either symptom is worsening. Seek urgent care for yellow eyes or skin, severe abdominal pain, fever, repeated vomiting, confusion, fainting, swelling, or very little urine. Pregnant people with new intense itching or dark urine should contact their maternity or medical team promptly.
