Dark urine with headache, fatigue and nausea

Urine can become darker when the body loses fluid through sweating, vomiting, diarrhoea, fever, or simply drinking less. Fluid loss can also contribute to headache, tiredness, dry mouth, dizziness, and nausea. Heat exposure can make this pattern more concerning, especially when sweating has been heavy. Dark urine may instead result from bile pigments, medicines, foods, or blood-related changes, so colour alone cannot identify the cause.

Ask yourself whether symptoms began after heat, exercise, reduced drinking, stomach upset, new medication, or travel. Fever, abdominal pain, yellow eyes, pale stools, burning when urinating, or marked weakness change the urgency and should be shared with a clinician.

Rest somewhere cool and take small, frequent sips of water or an oral rehydration drink if you are awake and able to swallow. Avoid alcohol and strenuous activity while symptoms continue. Monitor whether urine becomes lighter and whether headache or nausea improves. Arrange medical advice if you cannot replace fluids, symptoms persist, or the dark colour has no clear explanation. Write down vomiting, diarrhoea, fever, heat exposure, and medicines.

Get urgent care for confusion, fainting, severe headache, inability to keep fluids down, very little urine, worsening weakness, high fever, yellowing of the eyes, or severe abdominal pain. Heat-related illness can worsen quickly, and altered alertness is an emergency sign. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint or confused.

Ask what is most likely causing the combination, whether urine or blood testing is needed, and how much fluid is suitable for you. Ask which changes in urine, alertness, fever, or pain should trigger urgent review.
