Dark urine and gallstones

Gallstones are hardened material in the gallbladder. If one moves into a bile duct, bile may not reach the intestine normally. Bile pigments can accumulate in the bloodstream and leave through the kidneys, giving urine a dark brown or tea-like appearance. A blocked duct may also cause yellow eyes or skin, pale stools, itching, nausea, or pain in the upper right abdomen. Dark urine by itself cannot show whether a stone is present, and many other causes are possible.

A clinician may ask about the timing of pain, meals, fever, vomiting, bowel changes, and previous episodes. Blood tests and an ultrasound or other imaging can help assess the gallbladder, bile ducts, liver, and nearby structures.

Arrange medical advice if dark urine lasts beyond a short period, keeps returning, or appears with abdominal pain or yellowing. Sip fluids if you can drink normally, but do not use extra fluids as a substitute for assessment when bile blockage is possible. Keep meals light if eating worsens nausea, avoid alcohol, and note any new medicines or supplements. Do not take someone else’s pain medicine.

Seek urgent care for severe or steadily worsening abdominal pain, fever or chills, repeated vomiting, yellow skin with marked illness, fainting, or confusion. A stone blocking a duct can become an urgent problem, particularly when infection or inability to drink is present. Get emergency help if you become difficult to wake or have severe weakness.

Ask whether your pattern suggests a gallstone complication, which tests are needed, and whether you should avoid particular foods or medicines while waiting. Ask how quickly results will be reviewed and which symptoms mean you should return immediately.
