Dark urine with a foul odour: what to know

Dark urine with a foul odour may be concentrated, but pain, fever, burning, or persistent change can signal a urinary or other illness. Odour can also be affected by foods, supplements, or medicines. Notice whether the smell is new, whether urine looks cloudy, and whether symptoms occur each time you pass urine.

Concentrated urine can smell stronger, particularly after sweating, poor intake, or a long interval without drinking; see Dehydration for related fluid-loss symptoms. A foul smell with burning, urgency, frequent urination, pelvic discomfort, or cloudy urine may occur with a urinary infection and deserves clinical advice. Fever or side pain raises concern for a more significant infection. Brown urine with yellow skin or eyes can accompany Hepatitis A or Hepatitis B. Heat Exhaustion is relevant when heavy sweating and heat exposure preceded the change.

Drink normally if you are able, and observe the next samples without trying to mask the odour with excessive water. Avoid using someone else’s antibiotics or relying on leftover treatment. Note foods, supplements, medicines, sexual or urinary symptoms, pain location, fever, and how often you urinate. Seek urgent care for fever with chills, side or back pain, vomiting, confusion, fainting, severe weakness, very little urine, visible blood, or yellow skin or eyes. Pregnancy, significant kidney disease, or a weakened immune system lowers the threshold for prompt medical advice when urinary symptoms appear.
