Dark urine after hysterectomy: what it can mean

Equipment and setting used in Hysterectomy

Short answer

Dark urine after hysterectomy may come from dehydration, medicines, blood, or a urinary tract problem and should be assessed if it persists or comes with pain or fever.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the colour may mean

Deep yellow urine often becomes lighter when you drink enough fluid. Brown, tea-coloured, red, or pink urine can indicate blood or another change that needs checking. A urinary tract infection may also cause cloudy or strong-smelling urine, burning, urgency, or lower abdominal discomfort. After surgery, bruising, catheter use, reduced drinking, and prescribed medicines can alter urine or make urinary symptoms easier to notice. Dark urine is not a diagnosis by itself.

What to do now

Note the colour, smell, amount, and whether the change began after a new medicine. Drink fluids unless your clinician has given you a fluid restriction, and do not stop prescribed treatment without advice. Contact the surgical team or a clinician if the colour does not improve, returns repeatedly, or is accompanied by burning, urgency, pelvic discomfort, or difficulty emptying your bladder. A urine test can help distinguish concentrated urine from infection or blood.

When to seek urgent care

Seek urgent medical help for bright-red urine, clots, inability to pass urine, severe or worsening abdominal or back pain, fever, chills, vomiting, faintness, or heavy vaginal bleeding. These symptoms can signal bleeding, infection, or a postoperative complication and should not be watched at home.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether you need a urine test, whether your medicines can change urine colour, and which postoperative symptoms should prompt a same-day call. Mention any catheter, fluid restriction, urinary leakage, or history of urinary infections.

Questions people ask

Can dehydration make urine dark after surgery?

Yes. Reduced drinking can concentrate urine, making it deep yellow; persistent, brown, red, or painful urine needs medical advice.

Is dark urine a normal part of hysterectomy recovery?

It can occur during recovery, but it should not be assumed normal when it persists or comes with fever, pain, bleeding, or trouble urinating.
