What should you know about dark spotting mid cycle?

Short answer
Dark spotting mid cycle is often older blood leaving the uterus, but repeated, heavy, painful, or pregnancy-related bleeding needs medical assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common appearance
- Brown or dark spotting may be older blood.
- Track
- Note timing, amount, triggers, and associated symptoms.
- Pregnancy
- Test when pregnancy is possible and seek prompt care for pain or faintness.
What the colour and timing can mean
Blood can look brown or dark when it takes longer to leave the vagina and has had time to oxidise. A small amount around the middle of the cycle can occur with normal hormonal changes, especially when ovulation shifts the lining or causes brief cervical bleeding.
Other explanations include starting or stopping hormonal contraception, a missed or late dose, irritation after sex, infection such as chlamydia, or changes inside the cervix or uterus. Cervical dysplasia, polyps, fibroids, and womb or cervical cancer can also present with bleeding between periods, but spotting alone cannot identify the cause. A pregnancy test is sensible when pregnancy is possible, because early-pregnancy bleeding needs a different assessment.
Record the date, colour, amount, relation to sex or your cycle, and symptoms such as pelvic pain, unusual discharge, fever, dizziness, or pain with urination. That pattern gives a clinician useful context.
What you can do now
Use a liner if needed and observe whether the spotting stops. Continue prescribed contraception unless a clinician tells you otherwise; do not double doses to compensate for a missed tablet without checking the product instructions. Arrange a routine appointment if the spotting returns, lasts beyond a short episode, follows sex repeatedly, or is accompanied by discharge, pelvic discomfort, or a change in your usual periods.
A clinician may ask about contraception, pregnancy possibility, cycle history, sexual health, medicines, and screening history. Depending on the findings, assessment can include a pregnancy test, examination, infection testing, blood tests, or an ultrasound.
When to seek urgent care
Seek urgent medical care if bleeding is heavy or rapidly increasing, or if it comes with severe or one-sided pelvic pain, fainting, marked dizziness, shoulder-tip pain, fever, or feeling very unwell. If you could be pregnant, bleeding with pain or faintness needs prompt assessment because an ectopic pregnancy can be serious.
After menopause, any vaginal bleeding or dark discharge should be checked, even if it is light and happens once. Do not wait for a routine visit when you feel weak, short of breath, or unable to keep fluids down.
Questions for your doctor
You could ask: What causes fit the timing and pattern of my spotting? Should I take a pregnancy or infection test? Could my contraception or a missed dose be contributing? Do I need an examination, cervical screening, or an ultrasound? Which changes should prompt urgent care?

Questions people ask
Is dark spotting mid cycle always serious?
No. It can reflect older blood or a temporary hormonal change, but repeated, painful, heavy, post-sex, or pregnancy-related bleeding should be assessed.
Can contraception cause spotting between periods?
Yes. Starting, stopping, changing, or missing hormonal contraception can disrupt the uterine lining and cause spotting. Follow the medicine instructions and ask a clinician or pharmacist about missed doses.
When should dark spotting be checked?
Arrange medical advice when it keeps returning, lasts beyond a short episode, follows sex, occurs after menopause, or comes with pain, fever, unusual discharge, dizziness, or possible pregnancy.
