Short answer

Dark spots on hands and legs can follow sun exposure, bites, injuries, or inflammation; their pattern and change guide the next step.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Reading the pattern

Marks on sun-exposed hands and lower legs may be sun spots. Darkening that remains after eczema, a scrape, shaving irritation, or an insect bite is often post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Melasma usually affects the face, while tinea versicolor more often causes patches with fine scale on the trunk.

Compare both sides of the body. Several similar, flat marks suggest a different process from one raised spot with an uneven border. Record when the marks began, any preceding rash or injury, and whether the surface is itchy, tender, or scaly.

What you can do now

Protect exposed hands and legs with sunscreen, clothing, and shade. Keep the skin moisturised and avoid scratching, harsh scrubs, and unlabelled bleaching products. If a rash is present, treating the irritation matters because ongoing inflammation can create new pigment.

A dermatologist can examine the distribution and surface before recommending care. Depending on the cause and location, options may include a chemical peel, skin brightening treatment, or picosecond laser treatment. Darker skin tones can be more prone to treatment-related irritation, so tailored planning matters.

When a review is needed

Book a skin assessment if one mark enlarges, changes shape or colour, becomes raised, bleeds, crusts, hurts, or does not heal. Seek prompt advice when spots appear rapidly across the body, or when pigment change comes with fever, swelling, or a persistent widespread rash.

Useful questions

Ask whether the hand and leg marks share one cause, whether a dermatoscope examination is appropriate, and whether any current medicines or products could contribute. Ask what improvement should look like and how to reduce irritation during treatment.

Questions people ask

Are matching spots on both legs always harmless?

A symmetrical pattern can provide a useful clue, but it does not identify the cause by itself; persistent or changing marks still deserve assessment.

Will a peel remove every dark spot?

A peel may help selected pigment problems, but results depend on the diagnosis, pigment depth, skin tone, and aftercare.
