What should you know about dark itchy spots on skin?

A spot centred on a hair follicle, especially after shaving, sweating, or friction, can fit folliculitis or razor bumps. Blocked pores with blackheads, whiteheads, or tender bumps can occur with acne; hormonal acne often follows a recurring pattern around hormonal changes. Rosacea can cause inflamed bumps with facial flushing, while perioral dermatitis tends to cluster around the mouth.

Brown or grey colour may be post-inflammatory pigment rather than ongoing infection. The number of spots, their locations, whether they are all similar, and whether they form pus, scale, or a deep tender lump help a clinician narrow the possibilities.

Cleanse gently and avoid squeezing, picking, abrasive scrubs, and heavy products that seem to worsen the spots. Pause close shaving over irritated skin and use clean, non-sharing razors when you resume. Keep a note of new cosmetics, hair products, medicines, sweating, and cycle-related changes.

If spots continue, recur, scar, or leave widening dark marks, arrange a dermatology review. Treatment may target blocked pores, follicle inflammation, or the underlying rash; LED light therapy may be discussed for selected acne concerns, but it is not a universal answer for every dark itchy spot.

Seek prompt care if redness spreads quickly, pain is severe, a lump becomes hot or drains pus, or fever develops. Arrange assessment for spots that persist, bleed, ulcerate, form a firm lump, or change in appearance. Widespread blistering, facial swelling, or breathing difficulty after a product or medicine needs urgent help.

Ask whether the spots are acne, folliculitis, razor bumps, rosacea, or another eruption; whether a swab or examination is needed; and how to prevent pigment after healing. Share the body sites involved, shaving habits, product changes, itch timing, and any tenderness or drainage.
