What do dark and foamy urine mean?

Dehydration makes urine darker and can make bubbles appear more noticeable. A forceful stream, cleaning products in the toilet, or a small amount of temporary bubbling can also create foam. Heat, sweating, vomiting, and diarrhoea can contribute; see Dehydration and Heat Exhaustion for context.

Foam that repeatedly remains on the surface may reflect protein in urine, which can occur with kidney or other health problems. Dark urine with yellow eyes or skin, pale stools, or upper abdominal discomfort may fit Hepatitis A or Hepatitis B. These patterns are not diagnoses.

Drink fluids normally if you can, then observe the next few times you urinate. Avoid deliberately overhydrating. Note whether foam clears quickly, whether the urine stays dark, and whether swelling around the ankles or eyelids develops.

Book a medical appointment if foam keeps returning, dark colour does not improve, or you have a condition affecting the kidneys. Testing a fresh urine sample can check for protein, blood, or infection.

Get urgent help for very little urine, marked swelling, breathlessness, confusion, fainting, severe weakness, persistent vomiting, or severe pain. Seek prompt advice for blood in urine, fever, painful urination, or yellowing of the eyes or skin.

Ask whether the foam needs a urine protein test, whether medicines could affect your kidneys or urine colour, and what fluid plan is appropriate for you. Mention swelling, recent illness, exercise, vomiting, diarrhoea, or heat exposure.
