What should you know about dandruff over the counter treatment?

Non-prescription dandruff products are designed to loosen scale, reduce excess oil, or limit the yeast activity associated with seborrheic dermatitis. They are not interchangeable, and a product that helps one person may irritate another scalp. Check the active ingredient, directions, age restrictions, and warnings on the label. Dandruff can overlap with psoriasis, eczema, contact dermatitis, or infection, so repeated failure does not mean you should keep adding stronger products.

Apply the product only to the area named on its label, work it into the scalp as directed, and rinse thoroughly. Allow the recommended contact time when the instructions require it; leaving a product on longer is not a shortcut. Keep it away from the eyes, broken skin, and genital or facial areas unless specifically labelled for them. Stop if burning, swelling, blistering, or a new rash develops. Wash hands after application and avoid combining several medicated products without advice.
