What should you know about dandruff in newborn hair?

Newborn scalp scale may appear as soft white flakes or thicker yellow, greasy patches. Cradle cap is a common form of infant scalp scaling and may not bother the baby. Adult dandruff products are not automatically suitable for newborns. If the skin is very red, raw, wet, swollen, or spreading beyond the scalp, another problem such as irritation or infection should be considered.

Wash the baby's scalp with a mild product intended for infants, rinse well, and pat dry. If your healthcare professional agrees, a soft brush may loosen scale after washing; never pick or forcibly lift attached patches. Avoid essential oils, adult medicated shampoo, fragranced products, and home remedies unless a clinician recommends them. A doctor can decide whether a medicated shampoo treatment is appropriate for the baby's age and skin.

Contact the baby's clinician if the scalp is painful, bleeding, cracked, oozing, strongly inflamed, has an unpleasant smell, or the baby seems unwell. Ask for advice if scaling is extensive, the baby is scratching repeatedly, or gentle washing does not improve it. A newborn with fever or marked lethargy needs prompt medical attention.
