Dandruff because of a dry scalp: what to know

Dry skin commonly produces small, light flakes and a tight feeling, especially after hot washing or exposure to dry air. Dandruff may produce larger or oilier flakes with itch and scalp irritation. Seborrheic dermatitis can affect the scalp with redness and greasy scale and may also involve the eyebrows or ears. These patterns overlap, and a new shampoo, dye, or styling product can cause contact irritation that resembles either problem.

Use lukewarm water, massage with fingertips rather than nails, and rinse shampoo thoroughly. Choose fragrance-free products if the scalp stings or reacts after a product change. If flakes are persistent or greasy, a medicated shampoo may be more useful than adding oils, which can worsen buildup for some people. Seek assessment if scaling continues after careful product use, spreads to the face or ears, or comes with marked redness, pain, cracks, bleeding, or oozing. Hair loss, thick plaques, or a rash that began after dye also deserve review. These clues may indicate a condition needing treatment beyond moisturising or routine washing.
