Dandruff around the hairline: what to know

The hairline is where scalp skin meets the forehead, so loose scale can collect there. Dandruff causes flakes without necessarily causing a sharply defined rash. Seborrheic dermatitis may add redness, itch, or greasy scale and can affect the eyebrows, ears, and sides of the nose. Hair products, sweat, hats, or frequent scratching can make the area more noticeable. Flaking may also occur with dry skin or another inflammatory scalp condition, so appearance alone cannot confirm the cause.

Wash the scalp regularly with lukewarm water and apply medicated shampoo to the scalp rather than only the hair lengths. Follow the product directions and rinse thoroughly. Keep styling products away from irritated skin, cleanse residue gently, and avoid scraping scale from the forehead. If a clinician identifies a yeast-related inflammatory pattern, topical antifungal treatment may be considered. Do not put scalp products into the eyes or on cracked skin unless advised.

Seek advice if the rash is painful, swollen, weeping, crusted, or spreading beyond the hairline, or if itch disrupts sleep. Arrange an examination when flakes persist despite correct shampoo use, recur quickly, or are accompanied by hair breakage or bald patches. A clinician can distinguish dandruff from contact irritation, psoriasis, infection, or seborrheic dermatitis.
