What should you know about cysts on body under skin?

A skin cyst is a sac beneath the surface that may contain keratin or other material. It can feel smooth, rounded, and mobile under the fingers, although not every lump has these features. Some cysts have a tiny central opening, while others are covered by normal-looking skin.

Cysts may remain unchanged for a long time, then become sore, red, warm, or swollen if inflamed or infected. A lump can also have another cause, so its location, depth, movement, skin changes, and rate of growth help guide an examination. Do not diagnose a lump from touch alone.

Keep the area clean, reduce rubbing, and note whether the size, tenderness, colour, or drainage changes. A warm, comfortable compress may soothe an irritated surface, but it will not remove the cyst wall. Avoid needles, blades, and forceful squeezing because these can introduce infection and make later treatment harder.

A clinician may recommend observation for a quiet cyst. If inflammation is prominent, an intralesional steroid injection may be considered for selected cases. Drainage can relieve an abscess when infection has collected, while cyst removal addresses the sac when recurrence or ongoing irritation is a concern.

Book an assessment for a new or persistent lump, especially if it grows, becomes fixed, repeatedly returns, or interferes with movement or clothing. Seek prompt care for spreading redness, increasing warmth, severe pain, pus-like drainage, fever, or feeling unwell. Sudden change warrants review even if the lump was previously harmless.

What features suggest a cyst rather than another lump? Is observation reasonable for its location? If it is inflamed, would an injection or drainage be appropriate, and would removal reduce recurrence?
