Male Cystoscopy: What to Expect

The team cleans the genital area and uses local anesthetic gel, sedation, or anesthesia according to the type of procedure and planned work. Sterile fluid may fill the bladder to open its folds, which can create pressure or an urge to urinate.

You may be asked for a urine sample and to empty your bladder. For a flexible cystoscopy, you are generally awake and positioned on an examination couch. A rigid cystoscopy, biopsy, or treatment may require deeper pain control in a procedure room.

The clinician checks the urethra, bladder lining, bladder outlet, and openings where urine enters from the kidneys. If tissue is collected or an abnormal area is treated, the recovery instructions may differ from those for inspection alone.

Bring an up-to-date medicine list and report blood-thinning medicines, allergies, urinary infection symptoms, and previous anesthesia problems. Use the eating and drinking instructions given specifically for your appointment; these depend on whether sedation or anesthesia is planned.

Once home, follow the discharge sheet. Mild stinging, urinary frequency, pink-tinged urine, or pelvic discomfort can occur briefly. Fluids may help unless you have been told to limit them. Driving, work, and activity restrictions depend on the medicines received and any procedure performed.

Seek prompt advice for fever, chills, increasing pain, inability to urinate, heavy bleeding, or blood clots. Go to urgent care if symptoms are severe or you cannot reach the treating service. Do not dismiss these problems as routine recovery, because urinary infection, retention, or bleeding may need treatment.

Confirm whether your cystoscopy is flexible or rigid, whether tissue sampling is possible, and what form of pain control is planned. Ask when you can resume driving and exercise, how results will arrive, and which telephone number to use after hours if warning signs appear.
