What should you do after a cyst pops under the skin?

A pop may mean the cyst wall opened and released keratin-like material or fluid. The opening can reduce pressure without removing the sac, so the lump may refill. Nearby skin may remain inflamed, and the material can irritate tissue. A popped lump can also be confused with an abscess or another skin lump, so appearance alone cannot confirm the cause.

Wash your hands, rinse the area gently with clean water, and pat it dry. Place a clean dressing over the opening and change it when wet or dirty. Do not dig into the opening, apply harsh chemicals, or share towels. A clinician can decide whether an intralesional steroid injection, abscess drainage or cyst removal is appropriate; the right choice depends on inflammation, infection and whether the sac remains.

Contact a clinician promptly if redness expands, pain increases, the skin becomes hot, drainage becomes thick or foul-smelling, or the lump enlarges again. Fever, chills, red streaks or feeling faint warrant urgent care. If the opening is on the face near the eye, arrange medical advice sooner when swelling affects vision or eye movement.

Ask whether the cyst has fully emptied, whether infection is present, and how long to keep the dressing in place. Ask what symptoms mean you need review and whether removing the cyst wall later could reduce repeated episodes.
