Cyst under the chin: what to know

A skin cyst is a sac within or just below the skin and may contain keratin. It can feel smooth and rounded, sometimes with a small surface opening. The chin is exposed to shaving, cosmetics, mask friction, and touching, all of which can irritate nearby skin. When inflamed, a cyst may become red, warm, swollen, and tender or release thick material.

Not every lump under the chin begins in the skin. Deeper swelling can have different causes, so location, mobility, duration, and associated symptoms help a clinician decide what examination is needed.

Do not squeeze, needle, or repeatedly massage the lump. Pause shaving directly over it and avoid products that sting or increase rubbing. Keep the skin gently clean; a warm compress may soothe tenderness without treating the underlying sac. Seek an assessment if it persists, returns, enlarges, or affects your appearance or comfort. Depending on the findings, treatment may involve an intralesional steroid injection, abscess drainage, or cyst removal.

Get prompt care if swelling becomes rapidly painful, hot, red, or starts producing pus. Fever, chills, spreading redness, difficulty swallowing, trouble breathing, or feeling seriously unwell require urgent attention. A firm or fixed lump, bleeding, ulceration, or unexplained change should be examined even if it is not painful.

Ask whether the lump is confined to the skin, whether inflammation or infection is present, and what alternatives should be considered. Discuss whether removal is appropriate, how shaving or skincare should change during healing, and how to recognise recurrence.
