Cyst under the bikini line: what to know

The bikini line has hair follicles and is exposed to shaving, waxing, sweat, and close-fitting clothing. A skin cyst may feel like a smooth, rounded lump under the surface. It can remain quiet or become sore when the area is rubbed. Redness, heat, swelling, or discharge can develop with inflammation or infection. Ingrown hairs and other skin conditions can look similar, so a clinician may need to examine the lump.

Location alone does not confirm the cause. Tell the clinician whether the swelling is in hair-bearing skin, near the genital area, recurrent, or linked with hair removal, because those details can guide the assessment.

Stop shaving or waxing over the area until it settles, and avoid squeezing or puncturing it. Use gentle cleansing, pat the skin dry, and choose breathable clothing that limits friction. A warm compress may provide comfort, but it does not remove a cyst wall. Persistent, recurrent, enlarging, or uncomfortable lumps should be assessed. Possible care includes a steroid injection for selected inflammation, drainage when an abscess is found, or cyst removal when the sac needs to be treated.

Seek prompt medical attention for rapidly worsening pain, spreading redness, marked warmth, pus, fever, chills, or feeling unwell. Arrange examination if the lump bleeds, ulcerates, feels fixed, interferes with walking, or sits close to genital tissue and its origin is unclear. Do not assume a painful bikini-line lump is simply an ingrown hair.

Ask whether the lump is a cyst, ingrown hair, abscess, or another condition, and whether it involves only the skin. Discuss when hair removal can resume, which treatment is appropriate, how to protect the area afterward, and what recurrence would mean.
