Cyst on abdomen skin: what to know

A skin cyst may contain keratin, a thick material produced by skin cells. It can feel smooth, round, and mobile under the skin, with or without a small central opening. The overlying skin may look normal when the cyst is quiet. Irritation, pressure from clothing, or bacterial activity can make it tender, warm, red, swollen, or draining. These features can overlap with other skin lumps, so appearance alone cannot confirm the diagnosis.

A cyst is different from an abscess, although a cyst can become inflamed or infected. A clinician may examine its texture, depth, skin changes, and history before recommending observation or treatment.

Do not squeeze, pierce, or cut the lump at home; this can push material deeper, injure the skin, and make inflammation worse. Keep the area clean, avoid repeated rubbing, and choose loose clothing if pressure makes it sore. A warm, clean compress may feel soothing, but it does not remove the cyst wall. Arrange a dermatology assessment if the lump persists, returns, enlarges, or interferes with movement or clothing. Options may include an injection for selected inflammation, drainage when an abscess is present, or cyst removal when the sac itself needs treatment.

Seek prompt medical care if the abdominal lump becomes rapidly more painful, hot, red, swollen, or begins releasing pus. Fever, chills, spreading redness, or feeling unwell can signal an infection needing timely treatment. Arrange assessment for a lump that bleeds, ulcerates, feels fixed, or changes in a way you cannot explain. A clinician can also distinguish a cyst from other causes of skin lumps.

Ask whether the lump appears to be a skin cyst, whether inflammation or infection is present, and whether observation is reasonable. You can also ask how likely it is to return after drainage, whether removal of the cyst wall is appropriate, and what wound care would be needed.
