Cyst in the hair scalp: what to know

Pilar cysts form from cells associated with a hair follicle. They commonly feel rounded and firm or rubbery beneath the scalp, and the overlying skin may look normal. Hair brushing, helmets, or repeated pressure can make one tender. A clinician may examine its surface, mobility, size, and tenderness; a photograph alone cannot confirm the diagnosis.
