Cyramza for lung cancer: what patients should know

It blocks a signal involved in forming blood vessels that tumours use to grow. It is not suitable for every lung cancer, and the companion medicine depends on the tumour features and treatments already received.

Your oncology team considers the cancer type, extent, molecular test results, previous therapy, bleeding risk, blood pressure and general health before recommending ramucirumab. The medicine is given through a vein in a treatment unit and is paired with either chemotherapy or another targeted medicine in specific clinical settings.

Possible effects include tiredness, diarrhoea, mouth soreness, raised blood pressure and changes in blood counts. More serious problems can include heavy bleeding, blood clots, impaired wound healing or a tear in the digestive tract.

Give the team a complete medicine list, including blood thinners, and mention recent surgery, wounds, coughing up blood, clotting problems or uncontrolled blood pressure. Before and during treatment, clinicians may check blood pressure, urine protein, blood counts and organ function. Tell them about planned dental work or operations because treatment may need coordinating around wound healing.

Keep a symptom record between infusions. Drink according to your team's advice, use prescribed anti-sickness or mouth-care medicines as directed, and call the treatment contact rather than changing anticancer medicines yourself.

Contact the oncology team urgently for new or worsening breathlessness, fever, persistent vomiting or diarrhoea, a wound that opens, or blood in vomit, stool or urine. Seek emergency help for heavy bleeding, coughing up more than streaks of blood, sudden chest pain, one-sided weakness, fainting, severe abdominal pain, or sudden swelling and pain in a limb.
