Can you have a cycle after menopause?

Menopause is reached after periods have stopped for a sustained time because ovarian hormone production has changed. Bleeding afterwards is not treated as a regular cycle. Causes can include thinning or irritation of the vaginal or uterine lining, polyps, hormone treatment, infection or changes in the womb that require investigation. Pelvic organ prolapse can also cause pressure or surface irritation. Hot flushes, night sweats, vaginal dryness or mood changes may occur around menopause, but they do not explain away post-menopausal bleeding.

Record when the bleeding began, its colour and amount, whether it followed sex, and any pain or discharge. Arrange an appointment with a gynaecologist or primary-care clinician even if it happened once or was light. The assessment may include an examination, an ultrasound or a sample from the womb lining. Mention all hormone medicines, vaginal products and medicines that affect bleeding. Do not restart or stop prescribed treatment without advice.

Seek urgent care for heavy bleeding, severe pelvic pain, dizziness, fainting, fever, or weakness. Prompt review is also needed for repeated spotting, bleeding after sex, or foul-smelling discharge. Emergency services are appropriate if you feel faint or cannot manage the bleeding safely at home.

Ask what examination is needed, whether your medicines or vaginal dryness could contribute, which tests will check the womb lining, and when results or follow-up should be expected.
