Short answer

Restless legs in pregnancy may improve as pregnancy changes, while sleep routines, gentle movement and treatment of low iron can ease symptoms safely.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why it can happen during pregnancy

Pregnancy can bring an uncomfortable urge to move the legs, with crawling, pulling or tingling sensations that are worse at rest and in the evening. Changes in circulation, sleep and iron needs may contribute. Restless Legs Syndrome is one possible explanation, but symptoms can also be associated with Iron Deficiency Anaemia, Chronic Kidney Disease or Peripheral Neuropathy.

Your midwife, obstetric clinician or GP can ask about the timing and effect on sleep, review your medicines and decide whether blood tests are needed. A low iron result does not automatically explain every leg sensation, so the whole pattern matters.

Pregnancy-friendly measures

Keep a steady sleep schedule and try gentle calf stretches, walking, massage or a warm bath before bed. Break up long periods of sitting with easy movement, and use pillows to support a comfortable sleeping position. Limit caffeine if it makes symptoms or sleep worse. Do not take iron tablets, herbal products or prescription medicines for restless legs without checking with your maternity team. If iron deficiency is found, they can recommend the appropriate Iron Supplementation and follow-up.

When to seek care

Tell your maternity team if symptoms are frequently disturbing sleep, leaving you exhausted or appearing alongside breathlessness, unusual tiredness or paleness. Seek urgent help for one leg that becomes swollen, hot or painful, or for sudden chest pain or breathlessness. These warning signs need prompt assessment in pregnancy and should not be attributed to restless legs alone.

Questions for your maternity team

Should I have my iron levels checked? Is Iron Supplementation suitable at this stage of pregnancy? Which pain relievers, sleep aids or supplements should I avoid? Could another condition or medicine explain the sensations? What changes should prompt urgent assessment?

Questions people ask

Can I take iron for restless legs while pregnant?

Only after discussing it with your maternity team. Iron may help when deficiency is confirmed, but the dose and need should be assessed.

Will restless legs harm my baby?

The symptom itself is not usually an emergency, but poor sleep and possible anaemia deserve attention. Report persistent symptoms so your care team can assess you.
