Cryotherapy for lung cancer

Its purpose varies. Airway cryotherapy may clear tumour blocking a bronchus and improve breathing or bleeding, while image-guided ablation may treat a small, localised tumour. It is not suitable for every tumour location or stage.

During bronchoscopic treatment, a scope passes through the mouth or nose into the airways. A cryoprobe freezes tumour inside the breathing tube; frozen tissue may be removed immediately or break down afterwards. More than one session may be considered if obstruction returns.

For percutaneous cryoablation, imaging guides probes through the chest wall into the tumour under sedation or anaesthesia. Freezing is monitored to cover the target while limiting injury to surrounding lung. Air leakage around the lung, bleeding, infection, pain, and cough are possible complications.

Ask whether the goal is to relieve an airway blockage or control a local tumour. The team may consider scans, tumour position, breathing reserve, medicines that affect clotting, previous treatments, and whether another lung treatment better fits the overall plan.

Follow fasting and medicine instructions exactly. Arrange transport if sedation or anaesthesia is planned. After treatment, use prescribed pain relief, follow activity guidance, and report changes in breathing rather than assuming cough or chest discomfort is expected.

Contact the treating team promptly for fever, worsening cough, increasing chest pain, foul sputum, or more blood in the sputum than the team said to expect. New breathlessness can signal an air leak, bleeding, infection, or airway swelling and needs rapid assessment.

Call emergency services for severe or rapidly worsening breathlessness, blue lips, collapse, confusion, heavy coughing of blood, or intense chest pain. Sit upright if that eases breathing while waiting for help, and do not drive yourself.

Ask which cryotherapy route is proposed, its aim, and how the tumour’s position affects safety. Clarify whether tissue will be sampled, how breathing will be monitored, which treatments can be combined with it, what symptoms are expected, and which scan or airway examination will assess the result.
