What should you know about cryotherapy for actinic keratosis?

A clinician applies a very cold agent to the rough, sun-damaged patch and a small margin around it. The area may sting, turn red, swell or form a blister. Over the following days, a crust can develop and then loosen as new skin forms. The treated spot may look lighter or darker for a while, particularly in skin that marks easily.

Cryotherapy is suited to individual or limited visible lesions after examination. Because an actinic keratosis can sometimes resemble an early skin cancer, a persistent, thick, tender or unusual area may need another assessment rather than repeated freezing. Keep the site clean and follow the dressing instructions given by the clinic. Do not pick the crust or deliberately open a blister. A cool compress can ease discomfort, while the clinician can advise which pain relief is appropriate for you. Protect healing skin from direct sun and use the recommended sunscreen once the surface allows it.

Arrange the review advised by your clinician, especially if the patch does not settle or a new rough spot appears nearby. Depending on the number, thickness and position of lesions, alternatives may include Photodynamic Therapy, Imiquimod Treatment or Topical 5-Fluorouracil. Contact the treating clinic if pain, redness, warmth, swelling or discharge is increasing rather than easing, or if you develop a fever. Seek prompt assessment for bleeding that will not stop with gentle pressure, a rapidly enlarging area, or a sore that does not heal.

A spot that returns, becomes firm or tender, or changes in shape or colour needs examination. These features do not identify the cause by themselves, but they should not be covered up or repeatedly treated without a clinician checking the diagnosis.
