What should you know about cryotech vitrification?

Short answer

Cryotech vitrification rapidly cools eggs or embryos into a glass-like state for storage and later warming.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How vitrification works

Before freezing, cells are exposed to protective solutions that help limit damaging ice formation. They are then cooled very rapidly and stored at very low temperature. When treatment is planned, the laboratory warms the egg or embryo and checks its appearance and development before it is used or cultured further. Vitrification is a laboratory technique; it does not itself cause pregnancy and cannot predict whether a future treatment will succeed.

The method may be used for embryos created during IVF or for eggs preserved before a later attempt at conception. Storage duration, consent, and clinic procedures should be confirmed with the fertility team.

What to ask before storage

Ask which cells are being stored, how they will be labelled, how consent is recorded, and what happens if you change clinics or treatment plans. Keep contact details current so the laboratory can reach you about storage decisions. If eggs are being collected, follow the stimulation and collection instructions separately; vitrification begins after the laboratory receives the eggs.

Your clinician can explain how many eggs or embryos are appropriate to preserve and whether another treatment stage will be needed after warming.

When to seek medical help

Vitrification itself takes place in a laboratory, so urgent symptoms usually relate to the treatment around egg collection or embryo transfer. Contact your clinic for heavy bleeding, severe or increasing pelvic pain, fever, marked abdominal swelling, vomiting, faintness, or breathing difficulty. Seek emergency care for collapse or severe breathing problems.

Questions to bring

What will be stored and for how long? How will the laboratory explain the warming result? What consent choices apply to storage, donation, or disposal? If I freeze eggs, what treatment is needed to fertilise them later?

Questions people ask

Does vitrification guarantee an embryo will survive warming?

No technique can guarantee an outcome. The laboratory assesses each egg or embryo after warming and explains what was observed.

Is vitrification only used for eggs?

No. It can also preserve embryos created during fertility treatment.
