What should you know about croup treatments adults?

Croup causes swelling around the larynx and windpipe, often after a viral upper-respiratory illness. In an adult, a barking cough or harsh sound while breathing can also occur with other airway, lung, or throat problems. A clinician may listen to your breathing, examine your throat, and ask how quickly symptoms began before deciding on treatment.

Treatment may include a corticosteroid to reduce airway swelling. Severe narrowing may require observation, oxygen, or inhaled medicine in an urgent-care setting. Antibiotics are not useful for a viral cause, and ordinary cough remedies do not open a narrowed upper airway.

Rest, drink fluids if swallowing is comfortable, avoid smoke and strong fumes, and try to remain calm. Sit upright rather than lying flat if breathing feels restricted. Do not use someone else's steroid, inhaler, or antibiotic. Keep track of whether the cough, fever, throat discomfort, or breathing noise is changing and tell the clinician about any recent illness or allergy.

If a clinician prescribes medicine, use it exactly as directed and arrange review if symptoms continue or return. A nebuliser may be used in urgent care for selected breathing problems, but it is not a home substitute for diagnosis.

Call emergency services for severe or rapidly worsening breathlessness, noisy breathing while resting, difficulty speaking in full sentences, inability to swallow saliva, blue or grey lips, confusion, or marked drowsiness. Sit upright and avoid driving yourself if breathing is significantly impaired.

Ask whether the symptoms fit croup or another airway condition, whether a corticosteroid is appropriate, what changes require emergency help, and when you should be reviewed if the cough or breathing noise persists.
