Croup cough treatment for an infant

Croup swelling affects the upper airway, and an infant has less room for air to pass through. Signs can include hoarseness, a barking cough, and stridor when breathing in. Poor feeding, fewer wet nappies, unusual sleepiness, or tiring during feeds may signal that breathing is taking too much effort. Bronchiolitis and other infections can resemble croup, so the diagnosis should not be assumed from the cough alone.

Hold the infant upright against you and reduce stimulation. Offer breast milk or formula in smaller, more frequent feeds only if breathing and swallowing are comfortable. Keep the environment smoke-free. Avoid steam, forcing fluids, examining the throat, or laying the baby flat if that worsens breathing. A clinician may use medicine to reduce airway swelling after assessing the infant.

Call emergency services if the infant has severe breathing effort, pauses, blue or grey lips, cannot cry normally, drools or cannot swallow, becomes floppy, or is difficult to wake. Seek urgent medical assessment for stridor at rest, repeated vomiting with breathing difficulty, poor feeding, or a clear decline. Never leave an infant alone while breathing is noisy.

Ask which medicine, if any, is appropriate for the infant's age and weight, how to give it, and when it should begin helping. Clarify how to monitor feeds and wet nappies, whether overnight observation is needed, and which breathing changes require emergency care.
