Croup cough natural remedies: what may help

Croup commonly causes a harsh, barking cough and a hoarse voice when swelling affects the upper airway. Symptoms can become more noticeable at night or when a child is upset. A similar sound can occur with other airway or chest problems, so the sound alone cannot confirm croup. A child may have croup without a high temperature.

Keep the child calm and upright on a caregiver's lap; crying can make breathing effort worse. Offer frequent small drinks if swallowing is comfortable. A cool, comfortable room may feel easier than hot, steamy air. Avoid forcing food, using steam, or giving cough medicines unless a clinician or pharmacist has advised them for that child. Watch the child's breathing and alertness rather than judging improvement only by the cough.

Seek urgent help if the child has a harsh noise while resting, pulls in at the ribs or neck, struggles to breathe, cannot speak or cry normally, drools or cannot swallow, becomes unusually sleepy, or develops blue, grey, or very pale lips. Arrange prompt clinical advice if the cough is worsening, keeps returning, or the child is drinking poorly. A clinician may decide that medicine is needed to reduce airway swelling.

Ask whether the breathing noise is present at rest, whether prescribed treatment is needed, and how to recognise a change that requires emergency help. Mention the child's age, previous airway episodes, medicines, allergies, and how much they are drinking.
