Croup cough: how it is treated

A clinician listens to the cough and breathing, checks the child’s effort, colour, alertness, hydration, and ability to swallow. They pay particular attention to stridor while the child is resting, because it can indicate tighter upper-airway narrowing than a barking cough alone. The treatment plan depends on these findings and on how symptoms change over time.

Keep the child calm and upright while arranging advice. Give fluids in small amounts if swallowing is easy, and avoid smoke, hot steam, and unapproved cough products. A clinician may prescribe medicine to reduce airway swelling; give it exactly as directed and ask what improvement to expect. Do not share medicines between children.

Call emergency services for severe breathing difficulty, stridor at rest with visible chest or neck pulling, blue or grey lips, inability to swallow, drooling, pauses in breathing, or unusual unresponsiveness. Obtain prompt medical advice when symptoms are worsening, fluids are poor, or the child remains distressed despite calming.

Ask what diagnosis the examination supports, whether airway-swelling medicine is needed, when it should take effect, and whether observation is required. Confirm the dose instructions, possible side effects, and the exact signs that mean you should seek emergency help.
