Croup cough en español: an English guide

Croup commonly affects young children after cold-like symptoms. The voice may sound hoarse, and a high-pitched noise when breathing in is called stridor. These features describe the child’s airway symptoms; they do not by themselves identify every possible cause of a cough. Notice whether breathing is quiet when the child is settled, and whether they can speak, drink, and stay alert.

Hold the child upright and reassure them with slow, calm speech. Offer small, regular sips of fluid and keep the room comfortably cool without exposing the child to smoke. Avoid hot steam, which can cause burns, and avoid over-the-counter cough remedies unless a clinician recommends one. If you speak with a healthcare professional in English or Spanish, describe the sound of the cough and any noise during breathing.

Get urgent medical help if the child has noisy breathing while resting, visible pulling in around the ribs or neck, difficulty swallowing, drooling, blue or grey lips, marked exhaustion, or pauses in breathing. Contact a clinician promptly if drinking falls, symptoms worsen, or you are unsure whether the breathing noise is stridor.
