What a croup-like cough sounds like in adults

Croup affects the upper airway and can create a barking or seal-like cough, hoarseness, and a high-pitched sound when breathing in. In adults, similar sounds may come from laryngeal irritation, a viral illness, reflux, asthma, or another airway problem. A recording can help a clinician, but it does not replace an examination.

A cough that sounds harsh after a cold may settle as irritation improves. Stridor heard while sitting quietly, a muffled voice, drooling, or rapidly increasing effort is more concerning than the sound alone.

Rest your voice, drink fluids if swallowing is comfortable, avoid smoke and other airway irritants, and remain upright if lying down worsens the sensation. Do not rely on steam or leftover prescription medicine. Arrange a medical review when the cough is persistent, the voice is changing, or the sound is difficult to describe. Bring a list of medicines and note whether symptoms began after an infection, exposure, or meal.

Seek emergency care for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, inability to speak in full sentences, drooling with difficulty swallowing, sudden throat swelling, confusion, or stridor that continues at rest. Sudden onset after choking or an allergic exposure also needs immediate help. Sit upright while waiting and avoid food or drink if swallowing is unsafe.

Ask whether the sound is stridor, where the airway seems narrowed, whether reflux or asthma could contribute, and which changes require emergency care rather than routine follow-up.
