What should you know about croup and pregnancy?

How the structures involved in Croup differ from normal

Short answer

Croup usually affects the child’s voice and breathing rather than the pregnancy itself, while a pregnant caregiver should avoid sharing medicines without advice.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What croup and pregnancy mean together

Croup is swelling around the voice box and upper windpipe, often after a viral illness. It can cause a harsh, barking cough, a hoarse voice and noisy breathing. A pregnant adult can catch the virus that triggered the child’s illness, but pregnancy does not turn ordinary croup into a pregnancy complication. The child’s breathing pattern and general condition matter most.

Cough and fever may occur with the same infection. A child with croup should not be given a pregnant caregiver’s prescription or over-the-counter medicine unless a clinician has checked the product and dose.

What you can do at home

Keep the child calm and upright, because crying can make noisy breathing more noticeable. Offer frequent fluids and allow rest. Follow the clinician’s instructions if a steroid or other treatment has been prescribed. Wash hands, improve ventilation and avoid sharing cups or utensils. If you are pregnant, ask a pharmacist or maternity clinician before taking a new cold or cough product, especially a combination remedy.

A child health consultation can assess breathing and hydration. A nebuliser treatment may be used by clinicians when airway symptoms need additional support; it is not a substitute for urgent assessment when breathing is difficult.

When to seek care

Seek urgent medical help if the child has noisy breathing while resting, visible pulling in between the ribs or at the neck, blue or grey lips, unusual sleepiness, drooling, difficulty swallowing or trouble speaking or crying because of breathlessness. Call emergency services if breathing is severely laboured or the child becomes unresponsive. Contact a clinician promptly if fever persists, fluids are poor or symptoms are worsening.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the child needs an examination, which warning signs should prompt emergency care, and which fever or cough medicines are suitable. If you are pregnant, ask specifically whether any medicine is appropriate for you and whether your own symptoms need assessment.

Questions people ask

Can a pregnant person catch croup from a child?

The virus causing a child’s croup can spread to household members, although adults more often develop ordinary cold symptoms than croup.

Can I give my medicine to a child with croup?

No. Prescription and non-prescription medicines should be checked for the child’s age, weight and symptoms by a clinician or pharmacist.
