Crohn's disease in women: symptoms, care and pregnancy

Inflammation can cause abdominal pain, diarrhoea, tiredness and reduced appetite. Symptoms may change around menstruation, but a menstrual pattern does not explain every bowel change. Crohn's disease can also contribute to low iron or poor nutrition, which may worsen fatigue. Abdominal Pain and Diarrhoea can have many causes, so symptoms alone cannot confirm the condition.

Arrange a GP Consultation for persistent diarrhoea, recurrent pain, unexplained tiredness, weight change or blood in the stool. Record bowel symptoms alongside periods, food changes, medicines and energy levels. Ask about iron and nutritional assessment if fatigue is prominent.

A Blood Test may help assess inflammation, blood counts or nutritional clues, but results are interpreted with the history and examination. Do not stop prescribed treatment or begin a pregnancy plan without medical advice.

Seek urgent care for severe or rapidly worsening abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, heavy bleeding, a swollen abdomen, fainting, marked weakness, dehydration or a high fever. During pregnancy, new severe pain, bleeding, inability to drink or reduced wellbeing also warrants prompt assessment.

Ask how symptoms relate to periods, whether iron or nutrition should be checked, which medicines are suitable before pregnancy, and which warning signs require same-day care.
