What may be behind it

Pain may be at the entrance, deeper in the pelvis, or begin after sex. Lubrication changes, irritation and involuntary pelvic-floor tightening can make penetration painful. Deep cramping may occur with endometriosis, ovarian endometrioma or pelvic inflammatory disease. Vulvodynia and lichen sclerosus can cause vulval pain, while genitourinary syndrome of menopause may cause dryness and fragile tissues.
