Why does cradle cap happen?

Short answer

Cradle cap develops when infant scalp oil and naturally occurring skin yeast contribute to greasy scale and mild inflammation.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What cradle cap means

Cradle cap is also called infantile seborrheic dermatitis. It commonly appears as yellow, white, or brownish flakes that cling to the scalp, sometimes with mild redness. The scales can look thick because oil holds loose skin cells together. Cradle cap is not caused by poor hygiene, and ordinary shampooing does not always remove the build-up immediately.

The same tendency toward oiliness can affect the eyebrows, behind the ears, or skin folds. A baby may have no discomfort, although some infants seem itchy or unsettled. Cradle cap is different from an infection caused by unclean surroundings, and vigorous scrubbing can irritate delicate skin.

What you can do at home

Wash the scalp with a mild baby shampoo, then gently massage the lather over the affected area. A soft baby brush can lift loosened flakes after washing; do not pick, scratch, or pull scales that are still attached. If the scalp remains dry or the scales are stubborn, a clinician may suggest an emollient approach to soften them before washing.

Stop any product that causes redness or stinging. Avoid adult dandruff products, essential oils, and medicated creams unless a healthcare professional has recommended them for your baby. If the appearance extends beyond the scalp or does not settle with gentle care, a clinician can check whether another skin condition is present and discuss options such as topical antifungal treatment when appropriate.

When to seek medical care

Arrange a clinical assessment if the skin is very red, swollen, cracked, bleeding, oozing, or develops crusting that does not look like simple scale. Seek advice if your baby seems in pain, has a fever, is feeding poorly, or the rash is spreading quickly. A healthcare professional can distinguish cradle cap from eczema, psoriasis, contact irritation, or an infection and choose an age-appropriate treatment.

Bring the names of products used on the scalp and mention when the changes began. Do not share prescription or antifungal treatment between children, even if the rash looks similar.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the scalp changes fit cradle cap, which cleanser or emollient is suitable for your baby's age, and how often to use it. You can also ask which signs would mean the skin needs review and whether affected areas outside the scalp need separate care.

Questions people ask

Is cradle cap caused by poor hygiene?

No. It relates to scalp oil, skin-cell build-up, and naturally occurring skin yeast rather than a caregiver failing to wash the baby.

Can I remove the scales by scraping them off?

No. Scraping or picking can damage the skin and encourage bleeding or irritation. Soften loosened scale and brush gently instead.

When should a baby with cradle cap be checked?

Arrange medical advice for marked redness, swelling, cracks, bleeding, oozing, fever, pain, poor feeding, rapid spread, or a rash that does not improve with gentle care.
