Cradle cap on cheeks: what parents should know

Cradle cap, also called infantile seborrheic dermatitis, is an inflammatory rash that can affect areas where skin oil collects. On the cheeks it may look like fine flakes, yellowish scale, or slightly pink patches. It can appear near the nose, ears, or hairline as well as on the cheeks. Babies may seem comfortable, although rubbing can make the skin more irritated. This pattern is different from a deep infection, but other rashes can look similar, especially if the skin is very red or weeping.

Wash the area with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free cleanser, using your fingertips rather than a cloth or brush. Pat dry, then apply a thin layer of a plain moisturiser suited to infants; see Emollient Therapy for general moisturising guidance. Do not pick, scrape, or use adult dandruff products on the cheeks. Keep saliva, milk, and fragranced wipes from sitting on the skin, and change damp clothing or bibs. Arrange a medical review if the cheeks become painful, hot, swollen, cracked, or covered with fluid, pus, or crusting, or if the rash spreads quickly. Seek prompt advice if your baby seems unwell, feeds poorly, or has a fever. A clinician should also assess a rash close to the eyes or one that does not improve with gentle care, because eczema, contact irritation, and infection may need different treatment.
