Why cradle cap keeps coming back

Cradle cap is linked to the way infant skin and scalp oils interact, so clearing visible flakes does not always end the tendency to scale immediately. Sweat, friction from hats, and leftover product can make the scalp look more irritated. Recurrence can also mean the original rash was eczema, psoriasis, contact irritation, or an infection rather than cradle cap. The pattern, distribution, and level of discomfort matter.

Use a simple routine: soften attached scale with a small amount of fragrance-free emollient, wash with mild shampoo, and brush only loose flakes. Rinse carefully and avoid fragranced products, scratching, and frequent vigorous washing. Keep a note of products, bathing frequency, and where the rash appears. If a clinician has prescribed a treatment, use it exactly as directed rather than extending or repeating it without advice. Topical antifungal treatment may be considered only when a clinician identifies a reason for it.

Book a clinical review if the rash repeatedly returns despite gentle care, spreads to the face or body, causes intense itching, or leads to hair loss, cracks, bleeding, wetness, or thick inflamed plaques. Seek prompt advice for fever, poor feeding, unusual sleepiness, or rapidly worsening skin. Bring a photograph from a flare if the appearance changes before the appointment.
